Help! How can I stop my long hair from breaking?

I quit wearing it in a pony tail because I figured the rubber band broke it. Sometimes I French braid it. Mostly I wear a hair stick as I figured that won't break it, but it still breaks off at about where I'd wear a scrunchie for a long pony tail anyway. How can I stop the breakage please?
