How was life in Lesotho during apartheid in South Africa since its surrounded by South Africa?

I imagine it would have to be hell; you couldn't go anywhere outside the country unless you fly or was there an exception for people from Lesotho if they are driving out to Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Swaziland
