Why do we need to learn about reflection, translation, symmetry, rotation in math? Will we ever use this stuff?

I think the answer is "you will probably never use this stuff." I have seen some answers to such questions and, to my mind, they are almost always sort of lame. Lame because, interesting as they may be, they have nothing to do with what the student is charged with understanding. I think when a student plays the utility card, they are trying to find an out that will allow them to feel comfortable with their inability to understand the concepts being placed before them. My opinion is that students enjoy succeeding and they will do just about anything if they know, at least at Bloom's application level, what they are doing.
