If you your kids, how are you supposed to teach them not to hit?

When my pre-schooler hits someone (which is a natural phase), I take pride in looking my little boy straight in the eyes and saying, "Hitting is wrong. Know one hits you. We don't do that in this family." I'm curious how parents that choose to handle that situation.
